Hi

Description:

I have windows 2003 SP2 32bit VM on vSphere 5.1. It is stuck on installation MSSQL 2000 SP4 update 76% with error:

Opening a console to a virtual machine fails with the error: Unable to connect to the MKS: Error connecting to /bin/vmx process

That is not related to bad vmx file as vmware wrote about it is related to something with update DB software procedure on current OS.

I did not found the way how to fix it and decided to skip DB update.

Solution:

1. Here the way how to stop VM from command line of ESX:

# esxcli vm process list

….

win2k3-32
   World ID: 38581185
   Process ID: 0
   VMX Cartel ID: 38450110
   UUID: 42 1c 89 e8 ac 21 c0 2f-da 9a 95 79 99 d1 64 e2
   Display Name: win2k3-32
   Config File: /vmfs/volumes/0a019828-147b09fd/win2k3-32/win2k3-32.vmx
…..

# esxcli vm process kill --type=force --world-id=38581185

You may need be able to restart VMware client on your server, because it maybe unresponsive. After restart power on VM and all will works.
